Protect Your Eyes

Diabetes is a disease that affects how your body makes or uses insulin, an essential hormone that helps process the sugar in your blood. This disease can affect your body in a variety of ways, including your eyesight.

If sugar remains in your bloodstream for extended periods, it can damage the blood vessels that supply your retina, leading to various eye conditions.

At City Optometry, we recommend an annual dilated eye exam to protect the vision of our diabetic patients.

The Effects of Diabetes

Patients with diabetes have an increased risk of developing severe eye conditions

Cataracts

Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process. Our eyes’ lenses become rigid and cloudy as we age, preventing light from reaching the retina. Patients with diabetes have a higher risk of developing cataracts at a young age.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. Any damage to the optic nerve can lead to irreversible vision loss. Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of this disease, and patients with diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common eye condition linked to diabetes. It occurs when high blood glucose levels damage your eyes’ blood vessels, causing them to bulge and leak.

In more advanced cases, your retina may attempt to grow new (abnormal) blood vessels to compensate for lost fluid. These new vessels can break, causing scar tissue and floaters in your field of vision.

There may be no signs or only temporary episodes of blurred vision in the early stages of this condition. As damage progresses, this condition can result in blindness.

The macula is located at the center of your retina, and it helps you see objects in sharp, precise detail at the front of your vision. Diabetic macular edema is a common complication of diabetic retinopathy. It occurs when leaking fluid from the retina causes the macula to swell.

This buildup of fluid can result in vision loss.
